Magnesite powder

Magnesite Powder — Essential Raw Material for Basic Refractory Products

Magnesite powder is a finely ground, high-purity magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃) or its calcined form (MgO), widely used in the production of basic refractory materials. Known for its superior resistance to basic slags and high temperatures, it plays a key role in the steel, cement, and non-ferrous metallurgical industries.

What Is Magnesite Powder?

Magnesite powder is derived from natural magnesite ore through drying, calcination, and fine grinding. Depending on the processing method, it is available as:

  • Caustic Calcined Magnesite (CCM) — lower temperature calcination (700–1000°C);
  • Dead Burned Magnesite (DBM) — high-temperature calcination (1600–1800°C);
  • Fused Magnesia (FM) — melted in electric arc furnaces for highest purity;
  • The powder form ensures easy blending, fast reaction, and precise control in refractory formulations.

Key Advantages:

  • Excellent basic slag resistance — ideal for steelmaking and ferroalloys;
  • High refractoriness — up to 2000°C, depending on grade;
  • Thermal and chemical stability — withstands extreme environments;
  • Versatile usage — raw material for bricks, castables, and gunning mixes;
  • Available in various particle sizes — from micronized to granular.

Applications:

  • Basic refractory bricks (magnesia, magnesia-chrome, magnesia-carbon);
  • Gunning and ramming masses for converters and EAFs;
  • Slag conditioners and furnace fettling;
  • Magnesium-based binders and mortars;
  • Cement and ceramic industries;
  • Fertilizers, rubber, and chemical processing (non-refractory grade).

Grades of Magnesite Powder:

  • Caustic Calcined Magnesite (CCM);
  • Reactivity: high;
  • Purity: 85–92% MgO;
  • Used in chemical, agricultural, and binder applications.

Dead Burned Magnesite (DBM):

  • High-density, low-reactivity;
  • Purity: 88–96% MgO;
  • Used in refractory bricks and monolithics.

Fused Magnesia (FM):

  • Highest purity and melting point;
  • Purity: ≥97% MgO;
  • For high-performance refractories.
